These four live in your inbox. They have opinions — about rent, about your sleep schedule, about whether that restaurant is worth it — and they deliver them in Chinese. Replying is the drill; they’ll use the words you’re learning, and they’ll notice when you go quiet.

Quick questions

How is this better than Anki?+

Anki shows you the same card every time: front, back, rate yourself. Here a word comes back as an activity built for it, on demand — fill the gap, build the sentence, hear it and answer, trace it stroke by stroke and get told what you got wrong. Which activity you get scales with how well you actually know the word. Same spaced repetition underneath; the difference is you spend the session using the word instead of staring at it.

What is there to read?+

Articles built on what actually happened this week, served fresh every day and graded to your level. Or make your own — from a topic, a link, or anything you are curious about. Every word in every text is tappable, and the ones you tap join your collection.

Can I practise conversation?+

爱Chinese is bursting with 爱 characters who cannot wait to hear from you — a landlady, an outdoorsy friend, a professional contact — and they text first, in Chinese. They will also steer the chat towards whatever vocab you have coming due. Lucky you. Replying is the practice: every message has a pinyin and English reveal, difficulty has a dial, and you get a debrief at the end.

Why not just use Pleco, Anki and a reader?+

You can — I did, for years. The dictionary is excellent, the flashcards are excellent, the graded reader is excellent, and between them words fall through the cracks every single day, because none of them talk to each other. After a decade living in Chinese I got tired of being the integration layer, so I built the one app I wanted: a word you meet anywhere becomes a word you own. It is a labour of 爱, and I would like you to have it.
